Ready to jump into fraction instruction? These Valentine math fraction activities are sure to help your students deepen their fraction knowledge. These are some of my favorite lessons!
Fraction Representations/3D Heart Mobile
The perfect Valentine craft! One big problem with fractions is that students do not understand what they mean. As third grade math teachers, this is our biggest job during our fraction unit.
If students don’t learn anything else, they should know what a fraction is, and be able to explain each part of it.
If you keep this as your main focus, you’ll be so surprised how much your students will learn during your unit.
In this activity, students show 4 different ways to represent the given fraction. The first two ways are models. That just means two different pictures that show the same fractions. Students can do this by drawing boxes, circles, or sets.
Students are also asked to decompose their fractions. Decomposing fractions is one of the first fraction math lessons I teach each year. I teach students to break down the fractions into the unit fractions. For example 3/4= 1/4 + 1/4 + 1/4.
Lastly, students name one equivalent fraction. They can draw models to help them find one.
I have/Who has Fraction Game
A classic game with a fraction twist. This game keeps my students listening while they read fraction models. I often play this game in small groups. I give each student 4-5 cards. That way they aren’t finished thinking or listening after their one card has been read.
Equivalent Fraction Puzzle
In this puzzle, students find matching equivalent fractions and place them together to complete the puzzle. This can be a tricky concept for students. I allow mine to use whiteboards to draw models or number lines to help them compare their fractions.
