5 High Interest Informational Reading Lesson Plans for Winter

January 4, 2020 in Reading

Sled Dog Racing Informational Text Structure Book

I use this book during my dogsledding unit to teach my third graders to notice the differences between the 5 different informational text structures. Students complete the graphic organizers that accompany each passage. The short passages provide my students with more knowledge about dog sledding such as how mushers prepare for the journey, and what happens to dogs who are unable to complete the race. This could also be used as an assessment to see how well your students can identify the different text structures. When I don’t have enough class time to make the full book, I still have my students complete this sort about sled dog racing.

Close Reading About Penguins Freebie

This free activity from Comprehension Connection contains an informational passage about penguins. Students use the text to complete the included graphic organizer and writing activity. There is also a pre-reading activity to help brainstorm what your students already know about penguins before they begin reading.

Polar Animal Close Reading

Informational winter reading doesn’t have to just be about penguins. This set of close reading articles teaches students about polar bears, beluga whales, walruses, arctic hares, puffins, arctic foxes, harp seals, and caribou (my personal favorite). The download includes activities for each text and a polar animal research mini book.

These would be great to integrate informational text with your winter fiction stories.
