Chris Van Allsburg Author Study

November 9, 2020 in Picture Books, Reading

A Chris Van Allsburg author study is a great way to engage readers and strengthen their comprehension skills.

Chris Van Allsburg is one of the most thought-provoking children’s book authors. His storylines are captivating. His illustrations are eye-catching. From character analysis, to figurative language, to theme… the teaching points are endless! A Chris Van Allsburg author study is the perfect addition to any upper elementary classroom. Your students will remember these stories for years to come.

You’ll be hard-pressed to find a more thought-provoking and engaging children’s author. He is seriously my favorite!

Jumanji & Zathura

The first book in this set is Jumanji. Do you remember this terrifying movie from your childhood? The exciting story of a game board that comes to life. As a child this movie terrified me. Proof again that the book is always better than the movie!

Peter and Judy are shocked when their board game comes to life in their living room. They quickly realize they must complete the game before things can return to normal. This exciting story is perfect for character analysis and theme.

After reading Jumanji, I read Zathura. In this story, Walter and Danny find the Jumanji box. When they get home, they find the Zathura game crammed in the bottom of the box. This is a sequel to Jumanji but with an Outer Space twist.

Zathura is great for character changes. Brothers Walter and Danny learn to appreciate each other. It also works well for central message and theme.

The Stranger

The Stranger is my favorite fall read aloud! I love reading this story as the weather begins to change to fall. Click here to read about the comprehension activities I do with my students.

The Mysteries of Harris Burdick

The Mysteries of Harris Burdick is a collection of illustrations by Chris Van Allsburg. Each illustration has one caption, but is missing the story. These images are wonderful for helping students make inferences. You can also help students write stories that match the illustrations.

The Z Was Zapped

The Z was Zapped is an alphabet book that teaches students about alliteration. On each page, something happens to each letter. You can extend this by having your students create their own alphabet book. They could put a positive spin on it and have something good happen to each letter! I challenge my students to write as many words as they can that begin with their letter.

Just A Dream

Just a Dream is a great book for Earth Day. In this story, the main character visits Earth in the future. The future doesn’t look good! The Earth is covered in trash. This book provides an opportunity to discuss cause and effect.

The Polar Express

The Polar Express is Chris Van Allsburg’s most well-known stories. Students are very familiar with this story, as most have seen the popular movie based on Allsburg’s book. Upper elementary students can search through the text for similes and metaphors. (Example: “We drank hot cocoa as thick and rich as melted chocolate bars.”) Students can illustrate the literal meaning or explain the figurative meaning of these expressions.
