Looking for a holiday activity that will keep your students engaged and focused on key reading skills? This reading activity is my GO TO during this busy holiday season. I can keep my students rigorously engaged in the reading standards, while also sneaking in some holiday fun!
I help my students create an Informational Text Structure Book about Christmas Around the World. Each passage teaches them about different holiday traditions around the world. But each passage is written using a one of the 5 informational text structures.
The Activity:
The only supplies you’ll need are scissors, glue, and a stapler.
First I have my students read each passage and write down the text structure on the back.
Then, I let them compare with a neighbor. After giving them time to discuss, we go over each passage and agree on which page it belongs to. Then, I let the students glue them down.
After that, students use the information in the passages to complete each graphic organizer. Sometimes we do this together, or sometimes I let them work independently.
This is the perfect way to teach or review the informational text structures before holiday break, while also learning about Christmas traditions around the world. If you already do several holiday tradition activities, this product will be the perfect supplement to your unit!
